Lucky Stars Notebook

Today I have another little tutorial on how to make an altered mini composition book.

Mini Notebook_cropped2

For this project I started with a cheap mini composition book that you can pick up anywhere you buy office supplies. I used Darling Dear papers and wood veneer shapes from Studio Calico. I cut apart the page that had large images on it and choose the Lucky Stars graphic as the basis for my design.  Since there are 16 designs on that one page you could make a whole batch of notebooks like this.

First step is to cover the binding of the notebook with decorative tape.  You can leave it black if that goes with your color scheme, I decided to use a solid color since the paper I picked for the cover had a busy pattern on it.  I always cover the binding in two layers of tape starting with a piece on the front and back and then one along the spine being sure to overlap each piece so there are no open seams.

After measuring and cutting down the pattern paper for the cover just adhere it to the front of the book. If the cover is slick it helps to use a sanding block to scuff up the finish a little before glueing down your pattern paper.  Trim off any excess paper that overhangs using a craft knife or scissors then smooth out the edges with a sanding block being sure to pull the block from the cover toward the pages so as not to push the paper away from the cover.

For a more finished edge you can use distress ink and a blending tool to ink the edges of the covers as well as the edge of the pages depending on the look you want.

I choose stars and trees wood embellishments and used distress inks with a blending tool and paints to color them.

In addition to the graphic squares and wood embellishments you can also add flecks of paint or ink as I have done here in white.  To create a matching pen just purchase pens with a clear barrel that have a screw off end.  A small strip of paper rolled up can fit inside and create a matching set.

Decorated mini notebooks like this make great gifts, party favors or even just a fun place to write notes and lists for your purse!

Thanks for stopping by today!
