Get Whale Soon

Hello crafters!
Today I have a project using the January Studio Calico card kits.  This project uses the Copper Mountain main card kit as well as items from the Spaulding Bowl add-on kit. The great thing about working with a kit is all the pieces are already gathered together for you to use and be inspired by.  It is also a great creative challenge to think of interesting ways in which to use the items in your kit.

The main kit has thin steel dies that coordinate with the included stamp set, however dies like this can be used by themselves without the stamps.  I used the dies to cut through wool felt in various colors to create the whale and fish.  I also cut white card stock with the dies to back the felt with to stiffen the pieces up.  You can adhere the felt with different adhesives, I used a fabric glue.  Using a piercing tool and thread I added the stitching around the whale.

To create the “seaweed” I used the decorative polka dot tape layered in the background, the green grosgrain ribbon and the gold embroidery floss included in the kits. The woodgrain “sand” and embellishment “bubbles” are also items included in the kits.  You can adhere the “sand” using foam adhesive squares, this leaves space under it for the ribbon and floss.  By limiting yourself to a set group of materials you sometimes find new ways to use them that you may not have considered before.

Although the felt I used was not part of my kit the ideas shown in this card could be accomplished by using the stamps in the kit as well.
