Hello!
Today I have a special card and video to share. I was inspired by The Little Mermaid and had the idea to recreate Ariel’s grotto using the Magic Iris interactive mechanism for the center. Also, did you know that the current Lawn Fawnatics challenge is to create projects inspired by a Book, Movie or Song? Just a fun coincidence!
The most fun part of this card to me was figuring out how to build the grotto itself. I basically started with the iris and stacked my layers up from there creating the depth. I also wanted to make it colorful and try and mimic the look of the light and colors reflecting through the water. I inked each layer with a different color from lightest (near the top where the light source is) to darkest at the bottom of the grotto. I used cracked pistachio, peacock feathers, and wilted violet oxide ink to add to the dark gray cardstock. I also darkened up the topmost layer with some black soot oxide as well.
I used lots of different stamp sets on this card to find all the little images to use for her human treasures mixed in with ocean images as well. I made sure to use bright colors to contrast with the darker rocks of the grotto. I used darker teal for the moving parts of the iris and a lighter for the background. This paired with the tiny fish completes the look of the fish swimming out of the way to reveal lighter seas above, closer to the sunshine.
Creating my own cover for the Magic Iris did pose a small challenge to work around. I had to cut a notch out of the squares in the corner and extend the handle of the iris mechanism to reach far enough to work outside of the square.
